Which Beach Is Yours?
Zanzibar's coasts are not interchangeable. Pick wrong and you'll spend your week walking out to a distant tide. Here's the honest map.
Nungwi & Kendwa — the north
Best for: classic honeymoon postcard: deep water all day, sunset bars, the island's liveliest beach scene. Most of my first-time couples end up here — happily.
Honest note: it's the busiest corner of the island. If you want silence, look east or book the quieter ends.
Paje & Jambiani — the east
Best for: kitesurfers, barefoot cafés, younger energy, and the most photogenic seaweed-farm lagoons on the island.
Honest note: the tide goes out a long way, twice a day. Beautiful to walk; not a swim-whenever beach.
Matemwe — the northeast
Best for: couples who want calm, and snorkellers — Mnemba's reef is a short boat ride away, the best underwater hour on the island.
Honest note: tidal like the east coast, and nightlife is a book and a beer. That's the appeal.
Stone Town — one night, always
Best for: arrival or departure night. Carved doors, spice markets, rooftop dinners, and layers of Omani, Indian, and Swahili history you can walk through in an evening.
Honest note: one or two nights is right for most travellers. It's a city visit, not a beach stay.

Short & Sweet
3-day safari (Tarangire + Ngorongoro) → fly to Zanzibar → 4 nights north coast. From about $2,400 pp mid-range, all-in with domestic flight.
The Honeymoon
5-day Serengeti safari → fly from the Serengeti airstrip straight to the island → 5 nights split between a boutique Stone Town night and a beach villa. From about $3,800 pp.
The Full Tanzania
Kilimanjaro climb → rest day in Moshi → 4-day safari → a week on the sand. The order matters: mountain, plains, then ocean. From about $6,000 pp.

Zanzibar Questions, Answered Straight
When should I visit — and when should I not?
June–October: dry, warm, breezy — the sweet spot. December–February: hotter, still reliably sunny. Mid-March to May: the long rains, with daily downpours and many hotels closed. That's the one window I'll honestly steer you away from. More detail in my best-time guide.
What will a week cost?
A comfortable week for two — mid-range beachfront hotel, airport transfers, two or three day tours — typically lands between $1,500 and $3,500 total, excluding international flights. Luxury villas and private tours go up from there. Whatever the number, you'll have it in writing before you commit.
Is Zanzibar good for a honeymoon?
Genuinely, yes — warm ocean, sunset dhows, and hotel staff who treat honeymooners like royalty. My advice: split your stay. One night in Stone Town for the history and rooftop dinner, then the beach. And tell me it's your honeymoon — the surprises hotels arrange here cost nothing and land beautifully.
Do I need a visa or vaccinations?
Most nationalities get a Tanzanian visa online or on arrival (about $50–$100 — the same visa covers Zanzibar). A yellow-fever certificate is required only if you arrive from a yellow-fever country. Check your government's current travel advice, and ask me if anything is unclear — I deal with this weekly.
